4 year-old boy dragged away and eaten by herd of pigs after going outside to play

A four-year-old boy was mauled to death by a herd of pigs after leaving his house to play outside. The horrific incident took place in the Indian city of Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The youngster, who has been identified as V. Harshavardhan, was dragged away by the animals to rubbish dump where they attacked him and ate part of his body.

He is understood to have left the hut where he lived in the Singareni colony at around 4pm to play in a quiet area nearby.

Police were called after neighbours discovered the boy's badly bitten body, the International Business Times reports.

Speaking to local media, Siadabad Station House officer K Srinivas said: "A pack of pigs were loitering around the garbage dump and attacked the child on spotting him.

"The animals partially ate the body of the boy."

The boy's parents, who had been searching for him, arrived as officers were trying to identify him.

He is understood to come from a family of daily wage workers left unemployed because of the coronavirus lockdown.

The boy was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Residents have said pigs are a common sight in the area and are a constant disturbance on nearby farms.

But despite numerous complaints to local authorities, they say nothing has been done to remove them.

India has now relaxed some of the nationwide lockdown measures imposed to slow the spread of the virus, particularly those involving farming.

The country has so far had 21,797 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 681 deaths.
